Pots & Planters FAQ
What size plant pot should I choose for an indoor plant?
That depends on the plant’s size and how large it will grow. Pick a pot that is one to two inches larger than the current nursery container for most small and medium-sized plants. For larger plants, the indoor plant pot should be between two and four inches wider in diameter. Avoid choosing a pot larger than you need to prevent the soil from staying wet for too long. Conversely, a small pot could stunt the plant’s growth.
Do indoor plant pots need drainage holes?
Indoor plant pots with drainage holes are recommended but not completely necessary. Pots with drainage holes prevent excess water from pooling, which can lead to root rot. However, if you’re more experienced with plants and know how much water they need, you don’t have to worry about drainage holes. You can mitigate excess water by layering in one to two inches of lava rocks at the bottom, below the soil, to create a reservoir for excess water.
How do I style plant pots in a minimalist interior?
To match indoor plant pots with a minimalist interior, stick to simple geometric shapes, such as soft spheres and tapered squares. Choose neutral colors—white, beige, gray, or black—and opt for matte textures instead of high gloss. Terracotta, concrete, and stone will fit in beautifully with a minimalist design. Lastly, arrange pots in small groups of either three or five—or one large statement piece—to avoid overcrowding the space.
