Table & Desk Lamps FAQ
Where should a table lamp be placed in a room?
Table lamps, which are often used for task lighting, should be placed at eye level when seated. Use them on desks, side and console tables in the living room, and on nightstands in the bedroom. Table lamps also work well on accent tables to brighten dark corners or provide lighting near shelving. Remember to create balance in the room by using pairs of table lamps on either side of a bed or couch.
What is the difference between task lighting and ambient lighting?
Ambient lighting provides a room's main source of light, so this often includes overhead lights like pendants and recessed lights, as well as floor lamps. Natural lighting also falls into this category, setting the foundation in a space. Task lighting, on the other hand, is for focus on main activities. Desk lamps, for instance, are considered task lighting, providing visibility and reducing eye strain. Table lamps in a reading nook or under-cabinet lights in the kitchen are also task lights.
What color temperature is best for tables and desk lamps?
The best color temperature for table and desk lamps is between 4000K and 5000K. A light bulb around 5000K is considered "daylight" or cool white, providing ample light for focus. If cool white causes eye strain, a natural white bulb is easier on the eyes. A warmer glow is best before bedtime, so choose a light bulb closer to 3500K.
