How do I choose the right sofa size for my space?

Furniture is proportional in well-designed rooms, so begin by measuring the space's length, height, and width. If you place a sofa against a wall, it should be two-thirds of the wall's length. To make the space easier to navigate, there should be at least 30 inches of clearance for a walkway. If the sofa is solely for seating, you might want a shorter option. Meanwhile, a longer sofa is best for lounging, as it lets you lie down.

How should a sofa fit within a room layout?

Sofas enhance a room's design, directing a person's gaze to the true focal point (like a picture, fireplace, or television) and helping them instantly understand the room's function (like lounging and watching TV or entertaining visitors in a semi-casual space).

How do sofa seat depth and cushioning affect comfort?

A seat's depth and whether the cushioning is firm or plush affect a person's posture and, in turn, their comfort. Typical depth ranges from 21 to 24 inches from the front of the seating cushion to the front of the back cushion.
